Course Content & Entry Requirement for Bachelor in Secondary Education

"We are delighted to present to those prospective applicants who wish to apply for studies in Mathematics content degree offered under the division of secondary education offered by the Faculty of Science & Education at the Innovative University of Enga.

There are many programs on offer which you can choose from to pursue careers of your choice, and this should be in line with your subject combinations undertaken at the Secondary School level, also meeting our required GPA. We are proudly committed to pursuing IUE's Motto: "I will either find a way or make one"

The Faculty of Science and Education offers Bachelor of Science Content Degrees. And mathematics is one of the four (4) programs on offer for studies in 2025. Our Mathematics program is designed from the four (4) strands within the mathematics division and they are;

(1) Pure Mathematics

"Mathematics is both an art and a science, and pure mathematics lies at its heart. Pure mathematics explores the boundary of mathematics and pure reason. It has been described as "that part of mathematical activity that is done without explicit or immediate consideration of direct application," although what is "pure" in one era often becomes applied later. Finance and cryptography are current examples of areas to which pure mathematics is applied in significant ways."

(2) Applied Mathematics

“Applied Mathematics has a profound impact on our daily lives. Whether it is weather forecasts, search engines, climate research, secure online shopping, or movie recommendations, none of these would work the way they do without algorithms and tools from the mathematical sciences. More generally, Applied Mathematics is an inherently interdisciplinary subject, which covers a wide spectrum of scientific activities. It is the mathematics of problems arising in the physical, life and social sciences as well as in engineering, and provides a broad qualitative and quantitative background for use in these fields.”

(3) Statistics

"Statistics, the science of collecting, analyzing, presenting, and interpreting data. Governmental needs for census data as well as information about a variety of economic activities provided much of the early impetus for the field of statistics. Currently the need to turn the large amounts of data available in many applied fields into useful information has stimulated both theoretical and practical developments in statistics."

(4) Computer Science -
(We are planning to offer computer science courses in the future but not offered at the moment.)

Mathematics content program is designed to address an existing nationwide problem of poor performance by our school children doing Grade 12 national examinations.

Majority of the graduates of this new degree program will end up as school mathematics teachers, who are more confident and more competent in the subject than the previous lot. Upon completion of our 4-year content degree program, they will do an additional one-year teacher training under the Graduate Diploma in Mathematics Teaching (STEM based).

Exceptionally bright students, on the other hand, will be encouraged to apply for the Bachelor of Science Honors Degree (Mathematics) program soon or to other existing universities in the country and abroad, as a pathway leading to Masters and PhD and eventually for them to become university academics. However, most of our graduates will be expected to take the pathway of becoming teachers of colleges and secondary schools in PNG.

This new breed of teachers will have spent three years studying just mathematics full time, after the common science foundation year in the first year during which they do other compulsory science courses such as: biology, chemistry, and physics.

In this 4+1 teacher training model, the first four years are spent learning the content subject and one year (the fifth one) learning how to effectively deliver lessons in the classroom. We believe this model will help to address the current nationwide cry of poor performance by school children in Grade 12 National Examinations.

Moreover, while there may be other reasons for the poor performance in mathematics such as the lack of appropriate teaching and learning material (text books, for example), or the lack of motivation in students and teachers, or the inappropriateness of classroom size, or the ratio of student to teachers etc. All of these other factors are beyond our ability to address.

As a new university in the country, we realize that it is within our means and ability to develop and offer appropriate new degree programs, which will effectively address this problem.

It is our aim to produce at least more than 15 graduates in 2025, and within a decade from 2025 we will have produced about 150-200 such teachers. Moreover, this will make Innovative University of Enga the only place in PNG to obtain a content degree in pure, applied mathematics and statistics. None of the other universities in PNG is offering a degree program at this level.

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
First year students enrolled in this program will do the common Science Foundation Year Program, in which they will do Foundation Mathematics 1 and 2 while doing other relevant science courses.

The Minimum of B Grade in Advanced Mathematics in Grade 12 will be considered as the minimum entry requirement for this program with the overall GPA of 2.6 and above.

Welcome to the Department of Secondary Education at the Faculty of Education, Innovative University of Enga.

We are committed to shaping the future of education in Papua New Guinea by offering exceptional opportunities for approximately 300 students nationwide. Our department specializes in Sciences, Mathematics, and English, preparing students to excel as educators in high schools, secondary schools, and National Schools of Excellence.

Our mission is to train future educators who will thrive in teaching roles, with a particular focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Teacher Education. We offer a unique curriculum structured around the "Four Plus One" model. Students spend four intensive years mastering their chosen disciplines—Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or English—before progressing to the Graduate Diploma in STEAM Teacher Education. This approach ensures that our graduates are not only experts in their fields but also adept in essential teaching skills.

The department comprises six specialized strands, each offering focused degree programs: BSc in Biology, BSc in Chemistry, BSc in Mathematics, BSc in Physics, and B.A. in English. These programs are supported by a dedicated team of 44 academic staff members and 3 skilled laboratory technicians. We are particularly excited to announce the launch of our Graduate Diploma in STEAM Teacher Education, the first of its kind in Papua New Guinea. Our inaugural cohort of 19 student teachers has gained practical experience in secondary schools and a National School of Excellence in the highlands region. We believe these educators will bring innovative approaches and foster creativity and critical thinking in classrooms across the country.

Our students benefit from cutting-edge facilities, including three advanced science laboratories within our comprehensive science complex. These resources support hands-on learning and research, providing students with practical experience vital for their careers.

As a young and rapidly expanding department, we are continuously enhancing our infrastructure, academic programs, and student body. Our goal is to nurture the next generation of educators and elevate educational standards through innovation and dedication. We invite you to be part of our exciting journey toward excellence in secondary education.

Mr. Thomas Israel Alope
Acting Head of Department, Secondary Education

About the  Graduate Diploma in STEAM Teacher Education Program.
The Graduate Diploma in Education program at Innovative University of Enga is specifically designed to address key deficiencies in teacher training programs across Papua New Guinea.

To address these challenges, our program implements a 4 plus 1 model. Student teachers will spend four years building their content knowledge in STEM subjects, followed by one year focused on educational theories and practices. This approach ensures that students develop a robust understanding of both their specialized subjects and pedagogical strategies.

The program includes a clinical approach with two days of university lectures per week and three days of school experience, bridging gaps in both subject content and teaching practice.

Additionally, the program offers specialized training for student teachers majoring in English, improving their speaking, reading, and writing skills over four years. This comprehensive training equips graduates to teach English effectively in the modern classroom, aligning with national objectives for STEM education in Papua New Guinea.
